Psychology Of Bullying

Here at Kids Atlanta, we wholeheartedly believe that Bullying is a national epidemic that stems from miscommunication and placement of ones emotional trauma on to  a target or person deemed as inferior or less of a threat. Our approach differs from other martial arts and bullying prevention programs in that we believe that we can help both the victim and the instigator. For children that are picked on or made fun, we uses our expertise to help those students build self confidence  and an “I can do it attitude!” and for those students that have a history of bully like behavior or problems controlling their anger, we focus more on improving their self-discipline, and sharpening their listing skills and focus.

Through our years of experience and through our personal research, we believe that Kids Atlanta Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Sandy Springs offers a unique environment where the students and instructors go beyond being a simply martial arts gym, to become a place of learning combining exercise with being better students and becoming better balanced. As instructors, Daren and I seek to improve daily and to bring out the maximum potential in each and every student, friend, parent, teacher, pet, etc that comes into our lives

Bullying in America is a National Epidemic that has recently been given the attention that it deserves. “For two years, Johnny, a quiet 13- year-old, was a human plaything for some of his classmates. The teenagers badgered Johnny for money, forced him to swallow weeds and drink milk mixed with detergent, beat him up in the rest room and tied a string around his neck, leading him around as a “pet.” When Johnny’s torturers were interrogated about the bullying, they said they pursued their victim because “it was fun.”‘(Oleus)

The psychology of bullying has been extensively studied and there is no shortage in the information available to help educators and parents in how to safe guard their children and students from the torment of a bully but the missing link is a role model in which the kids can relate to instill these valuable skills and the confidence to dealing with a bully. Our team is consists of young, confident and well-spoken men and women who are still very much so young at heart. This give us the ability to connect with the children in a fun and energetic way while also utilizing the excitement and anti bullying themes of martial arts to captivate and educate. Our classes will highlight characteristics of bullies and allows the kids to gain awareness of activities that could be considered bulling. The kids will through engaging roll playing and martial arts demonstrations will take away verbal skills and appropriate protocol to deal with bullies and greater empower them to take the right steps at the first sign of bullying.

It is easy to point fingers, fortress our schools, push zero-tolerance plans, stiffen penalties for bullying, or simply ignore the problem and hope it will go away. It is more difficult—and necessary—that we as individuals, families, and entire communities create awareness and give kids the tools to be able to stand up for their own rights while respecting the rights and legitimate needs of others; to handle conflicts nonviolently; to act with integrity when confronted with difficult situations such as peer pressure to cause harm; and to develop a personal code (inner moral code) that gives them the wherewithal to do what is right in spite of external consequences and never merely because of them.
